A relatively new rating designation for sun protective textiles and clothing is UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor), which represents the ratio of sunburn-causing UV measured without and with the protection of the fabric. For example, a fabric rated UPF 30 means that, if 30 units of UV fall on the fabric, only 1 unit will pass through to the skin. All fabrics pill to some extent, although fibres such as filament pill less than most.[6] The primary drivers of pilling are the physical characteristics of the textile (including both the initial fibre, and the way in which it is processed during manufacturing), the personal habits of the textile's wearer, and the environment in which the textile is used.

Polyester is difficult to maintain as the fabric attracts stains, lint, wrinkles and static electricity. Static electricity clings to many fabrics, polyester in particular.

Anti-static treatment in the dyeing process is an economical and efficient way to get rid of the static problem.

Techniques used by the textile industry to avoid pilling include singeing the loose fibres protruding on the surface of textile, and spinning the yarn with a high number of twists per inch. Some fabrics are chemically treated during the manufacturing process in order to reduce their propensity to pill.

Sportswear Fabric should breathe well, wick moisture away from your skin and quick dry. Cotton, while OK for casual wear, but polyester is the best choice for wicking or dry fit as a breathable material.

In summary, the polyester material is water repellent, although it is hygroscopic. A simple polyester fabric, like any fabric, is not water repellent. A polyester fabric, if not contaminated, will however be somewhat water repellent by according treatment. And last, this polyester knit fabric will become waterproof or water repellent if it has a continuous coating or a membrane.
